The Buckskin Rovers

This issue contains the opening chapters of "The Prairie Fugitive: A Texan Romance" by Col. Prentiss Ingraham, presented as a companion to earlier stories. The narrative begins when two Mexican fugitives—a beautiful young woman named Celina Velasquez and a young caballero, Ramon Delporte—flee Comanche raiders across the Rio Grande. As Celina's horse struggles, Ramon abandons her, prompting U.S. Cavalry Lieutenant Willis Loring to dive into the river for her rescue. Loring drives off the Indians and safely escorts Celina to the fort. Discovering her father is prominent, Loring receives an invitation to supper at the Velasquez hacienda. The narrative follows Loring's romantic musings about his meeting and introduces two renowned Texan ranchers and Indian-fighters whom he respects, who dwell on a remote ranch with their frontier-dwelling mother.
