Beadle's Half Dime Library, No. 545

This issue of *Beadle's Dime Novels* (Vol. XX, No. 98, January 8, 1888) features "The Buccaneers of Barataria: A Romance of Piracy, With Fact for a Foundation" by Colonel Prentiss Ingraham. The serial opens during the Battle of New Orleans, where the pirate captain Jean Lafitte and his crew, including his eighteen-year-old son Leo (serving as lieutenant), man cannons alongside American forces under General Jackson against British invaders. Weeks earlier, the narrative reveals Leo's mission to the British brig-of-war *Vulture*, where he negotiates with Lord Lennox and Captain Grayson. Leo offers Lafitte's services in exchange for clemency from Governor Claiborne and General Jackson. Lord Lennox accepts the terms and visits Lafitte's island stronghold, encountering the pirate fleet anchored in the harbor.
