This issue features "Gathered In," a Western serial by Ed. L. Wheeler, author of the Deadwood Dick novels. The story is set in Durango, Colorado, a rough mining town plagued by organized cattle and horse theft. Suspicion falls on Bella Brennan (nicknamed Calamity Jane, Junior), a fearless young woman who mysteriously possesses considerable wealth and diamonds. When Sheriff Jim Jackson and a vigilante mob fail to find her at her home, they lynch her aged, paralyzed father instead. Ned Brandon, a newly arrived printer befriended by Bella, and Deadwood Dick Jr. arrive to cut down the dying man. Before expiring, old Brennan whispers secrets to Brandon and Dick that they refuse to immediately reveal to Calamity, leaving her father's true nature and circumstances shrouded in mystery.
