Deadwood Dick, Jr.'s, Discovery This issue of *New York Weekly* (No. 678, July 22, 1890) features "A Romance of Nevada" by Ed. L. Wheeler, author of the Deadwood Dick series. The serial opens in the mining town of Rosedale Flats, Nevada, where a prize-fight between two pugilists—Jack Duffy ("Johnny Jumper") and an unknown opponent—is planned to escape police interference. Deadwood Dick Bristol arrives as the unknown fighter, accompanied by his second Pete More and associates Johnny Webb and Harry McDaniels. At the hotel run by "Old Rosy" Rosedale, Dick meets Colonel Buck Blood, a mine-owner and town figure. Dick is captivated by Ollie Whitney, an orphaned girl employed at the hotel, whose father Jason Whitney had discovered gold near Rosedale Flats but died leaving behind a rumored buried fortune accessible only to his daughter upon marriage. Dick learns Ollie, educated back East, lives modestly despite her potential inheritance.
