Deadwood Dick, Jr., or The Nemesis of Nutmeg Bonanza By Ed. L. Wheeler, author of the Deadwood Dick and Rosebud Rob series. Published September 2, 1890. Chapter I introduces the mounted outlaw "Deadwood Dick, Jr." (Richard Bristol), traveling by moonlight toward Nutmeg Bonanza in Arizona. Wearing distinctive white felt and black cape adorned with diamonds and gold, he encounters a road agent at "Gospel Corner" canyon who attempts robbery. A figure in white—hooded and ghostly—appears, pointing at the robber and uttering "Doomed!" before vanishing. This apparition distracts the robber, allowing Dick to reverse the situation. The robber, identified as Blossom Bob, claims the specter is the "Nemesis of Nutmeg," an avenging agent who appears before striking. He claims six previous victims over a year. Despite his resignation to death, Bob refuses to explain the vendetta's cause, citing oaths. Mid-conversation, Bob is suddenly shot; Dick hears no shot but sees a bullet's work. A voice summons Dick from the darkness.
