The Sea Cadet

No. 1006 (February 2, 1898) This issue contains the opening serial "The Rover of the Rigoletts: A Romance of Green Shores and Blue Waters" by the author of "Merle, the Mutineer" and "Freelance." Chapter I depicts a violent storm along the Gulf coast where a ship wrecks offshore. Young Hazel Dean, a muscular sailor of twenty, braves dangerous surf to pilot a small boat toward the stricken vessel. He succeeds in rescuing two children from the wreck—a boy of eight and a girl of four—though the ship's passengers perish. The children are separated: the boy goes to Daniel Dean (the Commodore) and the girl to Captain Mountjoy. Chapter II follows a young woman riding her mare along the beach, racing against an incoming tide. Finding her escape route blocked by a collapsed cliff, she attempts a dangerous dash across rising waters. A man dives from the cliff to aid her, grasping her from the saddle as waves threaten them both.
