Captain Dick Talbot, King of the Road
This Beadle and Adams dime novel from February 1898 presents "Captain Dick Talbot, King of the Road; or, The Black-hoods of Shasta" by Albert W. Aiken. The story, set in California's Cinnabar Valley near Mount Shasta, follows the outlaw Richard Talbot as he forms a blood-sworn league with Mud-turtle, a Blackfoot Indian chief, and Joe Bowers, an itinerant bummer. Talbot seeks a pardon from California to escape the thousand-dollar bounty on his head. The narrative introduces the Black-hoods, a masked bandit gang robbing stagecoaches on the Yreka route. When an express coach carrying a distinguished gentleman is ambushed, a second gang of crape-masked robbers—seemingly led by someone else—intercepts the Black-hoods' robbery, suggesting rival criminal operations. The tale combines frontier action, mining-town intrigue, and bandit conflict characteristic of the period's Western adventure fiction.
