A Yankee Blue-Jacket; or, The Cruise of the Ringdove

This August 1899 issue contains "A Yankee Blue-Jacket; or, The Cruise of the Ringdove" by Professor J. H. Ingraham, a maritime adventure serial. The narrative opens on Lake Borgne near New Orleans, where Isabel Rosal, a nineteen-year-old daughter of a wealthy Louisianan, awaits her lover Louis Dumont, a Revenue Service officer. Louis arrives by rowboat after three days' delay, having been ordered to pursue a Mexican privateer schooner that has plundered vessels near Cape St. Antonio. He departs within days for this dangerous mission. Isabel's brother Robert suddenly appears and, enraged at learning of their relationship, draws his sword to challenge Louis to a duel. Isabel intervenes, catching the blade in her bare hand as the confrontation escalates with accusations and threats.
