The Dime Library: Thayendanegea, the Scourge

This June 1900 issue of a 79-cent monthly magazine features the opening of "Thayendanegea, The Scourge; Or, The War-Eagle of the Mohawks," a serialized adventure by Ned Buntline. The narrative centers on an impatient Indian youth demanding to know his father's identity and birthright from his mother, with his sister Onalova attempting to mediate. His mother agrees to lead him to the Mohawk Valley after the full moon, requiring secrecy and careful preparation. Chapter II introduces Sir William Johnson, the British superintendent of Indian affairs, who receives word from Chief Aroghyadecka that a woman named Dyagetto and her children—including the boy—have left the Miamis and are returning eastward. Johnson, whose past involvement with Dyagetto appears complicated, instructs his soldier Maleom to locate and protect them from the chief's apparent intentions. The schoolmaster Mr. O'Whackem is subsequently summoned.
