While traversing dense woods, his dog discovers blood and an unconscious Indian girl named Eeleelah, an Ottawa maiden approximately sixteen years old, buried beneath leaves with a severe head wound. Harry tenderly extracts and treats her injuries, bathing her wounds and staunching the bleeding. When Eeleelah feigns unconsciousness from fear, Harry departs but secretly observes her recovery and approach. She eventually speaks, acknowledging her rescue, though refusing to explain her injuries. As they converse, a stranger approaches through the forest.
