This issue contains "The Lone Hand," a Western serial by Wm. H. Manning, author of "Colorado Rube" and "The Gold Dragon." The story follows Wild Dick Turpin, a masked outlaw and road-agent operating near Leadville, Colorado. Known as the "Lion of Leadville," Turpin leads a band of robbers who elude law enforcement through superior horsemanship and strategy. Despite his criminal activities, he maintains a reputation for politeness and has never killed anyone. Sheriff Robert Bradstreet meets Turpin in Rattlesnake Gulch per the outlaw's invitation. Turpin warns Bradstreet that his trusted police spy, Jude Peterson, is actually a Gregerson from Black Run—a traitor using his position to aid criminals. Bradstreet dismisses the accusation. Before departing, Turpin boasts he will place his knife on Bradstreet's office desk, proving his ability to infiltrate the sheriff's domain and evade capture. The sheriff accepts the challenge.
