The boatswain Guiteau deliberately foments this superstition among the men. Under pressure from the mutinous crew, Ravel agrees to set his wife adrift in a lifeboat rather than allow her execution. Though Ravel claims to Clio that they are near the Mexican coast and promises rescue, he must maintain the deception before his men. As night falls and a storm approaches, Clio is escorted to the deck where a small boat with provisions and oars awaits her abandonment at sea.
