Beadle's Dime Library No. 407
This issue of *Beadle & Adams* (August 11, 1886) features the serialized Western adventure "Injun Nick on Deck" by Captain Howard Holmes. The narrative opens on a Texas plain where a bound man on a horse faces death by vultures, then shifts to New York where detective Claude Coldgrip agrees with Colonel Cantwell to search for a legendary "Gold Mount" in the Southwest. Before departing, Coldgrip visits a fourteen-year-old girl named Estelle, who gives him a sealed packet and cryptically warns him against his enemy "Injun Nick." Six months later in San Tonquin, New Mexico, a mysterious man named Adolphus "San Diego Dolph" Redspur arrives seeking the elderly Padre Selmo. The story combines prospecting, detection, and frontier adventure with the mysterious threat of Injun Nick looming throughout.
