This November 1887 issue of a popular weekly features "The Man to Tie To," a frontier serial by Philip S. Warne. Chapter One, "In a Hornets' Nest," introduces Six-foot Si, a blonde mining-camp hero who resolves to avenge the murder of Bob Cady, a miner whose betrothed has sworn vengeance. Cady was killed by Joe Moran over possession of a cryptogram revealing a valuable mine's location. Six-foot Si pursues a suspicious stranger from camp, eventually tracking him on foot across mountain terrain to a hidden outlaw rendezvous where Moran's gang assembles. Si observes them discussing their failure to locate Moran, who has apparently absconded with the cryptogram. The chapter climaxes when Si, concealed beneath a fallen tree while spying, is nearly discovered when a ruffian gathering kindling nearly steps on him; Si involuntarily sneezes, revealing his position to one outlaw named Sam, who recognizes Si's drawn revolver.
