Beadle's New York Dime Library, No. 535
This issue of the Beadle dime novel series contains "Saul Sundays' Search for Glory" by Jos. E. Badger Jr., a Western romance serialized across two chapters. The narrative centers on Major Holly Gardenhire's pursuit of Lida Corwin, a young woman in the mining town of Prospect. Gardenhire, obsessed with Lida after brief acquaintance, stalks her on the street and forcibly detains her to warn against her cousin Dudley Mann. The major accuses Mann—who works as a clerk at her father's bank—of leading a double life: respectable by day but dissolute and reckless with money and drink when socializing. Lida defends her cousin vigorously, but Gardenhire persists with threats to expose Mann's supposed crimes to secure her affections. The text is heavily romanticized melodrama with Gothic undertones of coercion and obsession.
