The Daughter Avenger

This issue of *The Dauntless Detective* (No. 566, August 28, 1889) contains Tom W. King's serial "The Daughter Avenger: A Romance of Secret Service Mysteries." The narrative follows multiple plot threads: the kidnapping of yachtsman Mervyn Temple aboard his vessel *Gleam* in New York Harbor by a mysterious fair-haired commander who commandeers the yacht; the impoverished Waters siblings—Beatrice and her brother Herbert—whose father's fortune was lost, with Beatrice receiving a detective agency offer from R.W. Ferrett promising "honorable and lucrative employment"; and Herbert's cryptic nocturnal activities related to restoring their family's standing. The story interweaves romance, intrigue, and crime elements typical of the period's serial adventure fiction.
