The Dreamthorpe Sensation
By Jackson Knox (Old Hawk), serialized in *The Drop Detective* periodical, this detective story begins when Inspector Byrne assigns Detective Karl Nordensterne to investigate a case brought by Dr. Paracelsus Dreamthorpe, an alchemist-scholar operating a sanitarium at Washington Heights. The doctor reports that his only patient, the wealthy Miss Salome Haworth—his distant relative and betrothed—suffers from a mysterious poison introduced into her system a year prior, which only he can treat. He suspects interference from Koffsky, her stepfather and purported physician, though Koffsky cannot access the facility. Inspector Byrne and Nordensterne discuss Dreamthorpe's reputation as someone claiming to possess an elixir of life, with rumors he is the original Dreamthorpe reborn across generations. The chapter concludes as Koffsky himself arrives at the precinct, agitated and demanding an audience, suggesting multiple parties are invested in the case.
