The Red Rapier; or, The Sea Rover's Bride

Five years prior, his daughter Lucille eloped with Spanish sea captain Rudolph Revello, devastating her mother and driving the merchant to madness. Now Revello returns by ship with his wife and their young son, hoping to reconcile. As Lucille ascends toward the cottage alone with the boy, her father—watching from the cliffs—recognizes Revello on the moonlit shore. Believing his enemy sent by Providence, the aged, white-haired madman attacks with a knife. Revello draws his sword in self-defense, and the father dies upon the blade. The narrative then reveals Lucille in the brig's cabin below deck, contemplative about her homecoming, while her husband prepares to land with their child.
