This serialized adventure story by J.C. Cowdrick, "The Hounded Detective: A Romance of Southwest Colorado," follows the genteel mine superintendent John Heathcote in Denver. Recently married to Nydia Lyndon, John encounters his stepfather, the corrupt Honorable Murdock Kinross, who stole his inherited fortune years ago. When John demands justice, Kinross insults him publicly with pocket change, humiliating him before hotel guests. Meanwhile, Nydia experiences premonitions of disaster, and a rival suitor, Osmond Millfield, vows revenge after losing her to John. Dark forces converge as the narrative establishes multiple threats to the couple's happiness, suggesting imminent catastrophe through supernatural foreboding and human malice.
