The operative leaves the house shadowed by a mysterious woman who pursues him through New York streets to the docks, where he boards the bark *Sea Sylph*, bound for Borneo under Captain Jacar. Meanwhile, Herman Holt, a reclusive financier who maintains a secret second residence and leads a double life unknown to his daughter Nanon, falls asleep at his desk late at night. A visitor resembling Holt enters his plainly-furnished room, bends over the sleeping banker with malicious intent, and raises a long white hand—the narrative breaking off mid-action.
