This issue of *Dan Dunn* presents the opening serial installment "Dan Dunn, the Soft-Hand Sport; or, The Gambler Broker's Short-Stop" by Joseph E. Receiving a telegram that his mother is dying, McCoy attempts suicide by train before being rescued by Dunn and an Irish railroad worker named Darby Devine. McCoy reveals his family tragedy: his mother and sister Molly await him at home, unaware of Ben's death. The narrative combines Western frontier vernacular with urban melodrama, following Dunn's involvement in McCoy's mounting troubles.
