Chip, the Girl Sport: The Golden Idol of Mt. Rosa This serialized novella by Edward L. Wheeler (author of *Deadwood Dick*) follows the opening day of a grand horse race at Bummer's Bend, a rough mining town in Northern Arizona. The territory is inhabited by Apache and other tribes led by Chief Hoko-me-go-to ("White Face"). General Howard commands a nearby military fort; his nephew Dandy Dell, a gambler and bully who claims to run the town, is favored to win on his horse *Flying Star*. Arrival of new characters—an eccentric young woman in male attire called Cinnamon Chip (armed with revolvers); Captain Mayburn and companions (rangers with good horses); and an elegant dandy sport on a spotted horse—threatens Dell's dominance. When Dell insults the sport, conflict erupts between the territorial power structure and the newcomers.
