This serialized Western story, "Scar-Face Saul, the Silent Hunter; or, The Mystery of Fort Rane" by Oll Coomes, opens on the Dakota prairie. An emigrant train led by Ishmael Bronson, lost in smoke from a prairie fire, encounters two rangers: the handsome Arnold Bush and young Tom Rane. Tom warns them to avoid the Beaver Creek timber and helps them construct a defensive sod fort. That night, Indians hidden in a creek attempt an ambush; Tom Rane's quick action repels them. A larger attack follows—outlaws and Indians together—which the emigrants repel after heavy fighting. The following morning, a U.S. soldier demands Tom Rane's surrender, claiming he is the outlaw Con Robber. Bronson refuses. Another assault begins as the story concludes.
