A Game of Gold

Catalog Note *A Game of Gold: Deadwood Dick's Big Strike* by Edward L. Wheeler continues the adventures of the outlaw hero Deadwood Dick. The serial opens in Big Bonanza, a remote mining settlement lacking women, where a church service is interrupted by Dick and his gang, the Rough-and-Readys, pursuing Frank Foster, a traitor who betrayed gang members to Judge Lynch for reward money, resulting in their execution. Deadwood Dick proposes Foster a sporting chance: they will dice with stakes being a perilous walk across a cable spanning a three-hundred-foot chasm. The loser must cross the abyss with hands tied. Dick throws five aces against Foster's five fives, winning the contest. Foster, now condemned to attempt the cable crossing, is removed from the tavern. Chapter Two begins with the traitor's fate and transitions to Deadwood Dick in Denver.
