Tornado Tom; Injun Jack from Red Core This installment of T. C. Harbaugh's frontier serial, "Tornado Tom: Injun Jack from Red Core," concerns two rival prospectors in unexplored Idaho wilderness. Tornado Tom discovers a mysterious map drawn in sand pointing toward a canyon, suggesting someone else seeks the same prize. He pursues the map-maker and encounters Injun Jack, a similarly armed and equipped man, in a narrow mountain pass. Before their knife duel can commence, a large Indian war party on horseback rides through the pass. The rivals briefly ally, subduing two young Indian riders and stealing their horses to flee the pursuing tribe. They escape to a swift mountain stream but encounter dangerous quicksands. Tom's horse sinks with him into the current; he briefly disappears beneath the waters while Jack watches from his own struggling mount. The chapter ends with Tom's hands and head resurfacing.
