Museum Catalog Note
This issue contains "Deadwood Dick's Bonanza: A Tale of the Great Silver-Land of Idaho" by Edward L. Wheeler. The story opens in the prosperous mining town of Eureka, Idaho, where the famous ex-outlaw Deadwood Dick and his elderly companion Old Avalanche arrive to begin honest lives. In the saloon called "The Man-Trap," Dick accepts a high-stakes wager from Red Brand, a wealthy mine owner, shooting twenty-four successive bullets into a single bull's-eye spot—a feat no one had previously accomplished—thereby winning Brand's valuable Big Bonanza mine. When Dick expresses no fear of Brand's warning about a curse on the property, a mysterious waitress reveals she is seeking her husband, the man Carlos Cambre, whom Dick once knew, and warns Dick of danger connected to him.
