This issue of *Beadle and Adams* (Vol. XXII, five cents) features "Govinda, the Tiger-Tamer; or, The American Horseman Abroad" by Captain Frederick Whittaker, an adventure serial. In the opening chapter, "The King of the Jungle," the Rajah Ram Sing hosts a spectacle in Jagpore featuring wild beast combat. When a tigress named Seevah nearly attacks the fat, jeweled Rajah, an English officer called Major Charlton shows courage, though he ultimately defers to a mysterious tiger-tamer named Govinda, a strikingly handsome man in cloth-of-gold who subdues the beast with his whip. Through successive demonstrations—commanding the tigress to retrieve his whip, performing acrobatic feats, and most remarkably, having a young boy named Ali feed the tiger by hand and ride upon it—Govinda proves absolute mastery over the animal, earning the Rajah's approval and the crowd's admiration.
