Catalog Note *The Denver Sport's Racket: Brit's Big Boom* is a western serial by E. L. Wheeler, author of the Deadwood Dick novels. The narrative opens in the dying mining town of Played-Out, where a dissolute Frenchman named Roth Roulere and his seventeen-year-old ward Mai occupy the only unclaimed land, coveted by the ruthless landmonopolist Lawton Leech. Mai supports herself through sewing and performing banjo songs at Tim Flannigan's Saloon. When a tall, ministerial-looking stranger named Mike Malone arrives on stage with a violent ruffian called Big Blacksnake, tensions erupt in the saloon. After Blacksnake shoots the stranger's offered drinks and they trade insults, the stranger defeats Blacksnake in hand-to-hand combat. A short, red-haired youth named Kit Bricktop from Denver then intervenes to prevent Malone's attempted suicide, demanding his promise not to harm himself.
