Beadle's Pocket Library No. 332
This 1890 Beadle and Adams pulp magazine (No. 339, Vol. 50, No. 98) features the opening installments of two Western serials. "Dakota Dan in Canyon City" by Philip S. Warne follows the titular character through a brawl at the Little Brown Jug Saloon where he defeats multiple opponents before befriending the mysterious "Queer Pard," George Saunderson, a gaunt, taciturn man. They escape a mob and form a partnership. The narrative then shifts to a mining camp where Dakota Dan arrives in a fancy wagon, drawing attention from miners including the simple-minded Saphead Sam, the envious Dick "Limpy" Mosier, and Shep Lambert. The second story, "Colorado Kate's Check" by the same author, appears to begin but text becomes fragmented. The issue emphasizes frontier action, dialect-heavy dialogue, and masculine camaraderie typical of the period's Western adventure fiction.
