A surveying expedition camps on the Columbia River near the Yakima confluence, protected by soldiers under Lieutenant Gardiner and guided by the old hunter Gummery Glyndon, who harbors deep hatred of Indians after their massacre of his wife and child fifteen years prior. Two chain-bearer cousins, Percy Vere and Percy Cute—slender and serious versus dumpy and comical—accompany the party. The narrative follows Percy Vere's quest to locate his father, Guy Vere, an eccentric professor of astrology and spiritualism who abandoned the family years ago. After discovering an advertisement for "Professor Guy" in an Omaha newspaper, Percy and his cousin travel upriver seeking him in the wilderness. Their journey to Fort Benton leads them to join Gummery's surveying party as the best means of penetrating Indian country and continuing their search.
