The Giant Hunter: The Mad Scourge of the Kickapoos This frontier romance by Harry Hazard depicts a love triangle among settlers in Illinois borderland. Ambrose Wraxall, a tall, powerful hunter and Indian fighter renowned along the frontier, arrives at the Todd cabin intending to propose to Ellen Todd, a dark-haired, strong-willed beauty. The young farmer Tony Ingo, slight and gentle-natured, sits opposite—he too harbors feelings for Ellen. After the Todd parents retire, Wraxall draws Ellen outside and declares his love, proposing marriage. Ellen gently refuses, saying she esteems him only as a brother and fears their similar dispositions would breed regret. Devastated, Wraxall kisses her passionately without consent before departing into the woods. Tony then confronts Ellen inside, learning of Wraxall's proposal.
