The Indian-Hunters

*The Indian-Hunters; or, The Maidens of Idaho* by James L. Bowen (Beadle and Adams, Pocket Novel No. 103) follows Maurice Bryant's return to the Idaho settlement of Wharbuton after three years' absence to reunite with his sister Fanny. During a stage-coach journey in autumn 1865, the party is ambushed by hostile Indians. The driver is wounded; Maurice organizes a defensive stand but recognizes flight as their only chance. As the attack intensifies and fellow passengers are killed, Maurice seizes an opportunity, strikes down an Indian, steals his horse, and escapes into the scattered vegetation. The narrative combines frontier adventure, family reunion, and Indian warfare typical of period pulp fiction.
