The Border Foes

The Border Foes; or, The Perils of a Night by Edward Willett is set in early Kentucky during the winter of 1780. Two frontiersmen—George Ryeburn, a twenty-four-year-old farmer's son, and Walter Wilson, an older borderer haunted by his wife's murder by Native Americans—return from the Holston settlements with flour supplies. As darkness falls, they camp near a river, unable to reach home. George confesses a presentiment of danger and reveals that Kate Atlee, daughter of his family's enemy Simon Atlee, warned him her father may plot against the Ryeburns during George's absence. Wilson, detecting what he believes is an Indian presence nearby through intuition, urges caution with their campfire. The narrative emphasizes frontier peril, family feuds, and mounting dread as the two friends discuss the suspicious circumstances surrounding Atlee's intentions.
