The Man in Green

"The Man in Green; or, The Siege of Bexar" This serialized adventure novel by J. Stanley Henderson follows two American frontiersmen—the experienced hunter Bill Robbins and young Frank Coyle—camped near Bexar, Texas in November 1835 during the siege. Coyle is determined to reach the besieged city to find Maria Saluda, a young woman he loves who has taken refuge with her aunt, despite Robbins' warnings that the priests and Mexican forces will keep them apart. Their camp is interrupted by a mysterious stranger dressed entirely in green—hat, hunting-shirt, trousers, poncho, even rifle and powder-horn—who introduces himself as simply "Green." The stranger, an older man with yellowish skin and restless gray-green eyes, claims to be a skilled hunter and scout with many enemies among the Mexican forces and clergy. He suggests intimate knowledge of their situation and circumstances, hinting at dangerous expertise in frontier warfare and survival.
