The White Avenger

The White Avenger; or, The Doomed Red-Skins By Major Lewis W. Carson. Published by Beadle and Adams (1870). A frontier revenge narrative centered on "the White Slayer," a scarred scout operating alone among Blackfeet territories. After his wife and children were killed by Indians, he wages systematic vengeance: infiltrating a Blackfoot village, killing sentries with a knife, then deliberately setting fires that destroy lodges and force villagers to flee. The narrative follows his escape and subsequent forest encounters. He discovers another white fugitive hunting deer and rescues him from attacking Indians, killing one assailant while the other flees toward what appears to be a larger camp. The Slayer pursues the escaping Indian but halts when hearing war cries from an approaching war party. The story emphasizes the protagonist's wilderness skills, marksmanship, and relentless pursuit of vengeance through ambush and sabotage.
