Blue and Gray Weekly, No. 18

This December 1904 issue of *Boys of Gray Weekly*, a pulp magazine featuring Civil War stories, contains "Winning the Day," attributed to Lieut. Harry Lee. The narrative follows Captain Will Prentiss and the Virginia Grays, a company of Richmond youth volunteers fighting for the Confederacy. After McClellan's failed campaign, General Magruder dispatches Prentiss to pursue Lieutenant James Steele, a paroled Union officer who has stolen valuable Richmond defense plans from Longstreet's tent and broken his parole. Steele has fled toward Union lines through the White Oak swamp via the Charles City road. Prentiss plans to intercept him, giving his exhausted troops two hours rest before a ten o'clock march. The narrative is interrupted by the arrival of old Cy Frame, a mountaineer acquaintance of Prentiss's family, accompanied by his granddaughter Enid, seeking to deliver news. The OCR becomes increasingly garbled in the final section.
