Blue and Gray Weekly, No. 9

This issue of a weekly pulp magazine features "Out with Grant," a Civil War serial by Lieutenant Harry Lee. The story follows Captain Jack Clark and his volunteer company, the Fairdale Blues from upstate New York, who secure transfer from the Army of the Potomac to General Grant's Army of the West. Grant assigns Clark and Colonel Spicer to pursue Confederate General Bridges, a guerrilla commander harassing Union supply lines between Cairo and Paducah. The expedition travels upriver by steamboat into bayou country. During an engagement, Confederate artillery hidden in the swamps destroys the transport Prairie Belle. Clark leads an audacious charge up a fortified position, successfully capturing the masked battery through hand-to-hand combat. The narrative concludes with Clark and Spicer planning an overland pursuit to intercept Bridges before he escapes southward.
