Witness testimony describes vessels caught in an inexplicable spiral and pulled into what may be an artificial rather than natural phenomenon. Baume plans a circuitous approach to attack it. Locke establishes discipline among the unruly pirate crew and secures quality provisions before departure, their first stop being Holwiger-IX station. A parallel narrative introduces Tryna Slayter, an enslaved performer in a traveling show operated by the brutal Petunia Raggan and her violent partner Troy Davick, who use physical punishment to maintain control. Tryna attempts escape at Holwiger-IX station but is intercepted by Raggan, who threatens her with whipping if she disobeys.
