La barrera de la muerte (The Barrier of Death)

Museum Catalog Note This issue of *Selección Terror* (No. 272, May 1978) features "La Barrera de la Muerte" by Burton Hare, a Gothic horror narrative set in the English countryside. After the sudden death and burial of wealthy John Lorraine, his relatives gather at the family mansion during a violent storm. Tensions emerge when cynical cousin Tommy suggests Anne, Lorraine's fiancée, benefited from his death occurring before their planned wedding. Strange supernatural phenomena begin: the deceased's wolfhound exhibits frantic behavior, Tommy reports seeing a medieval-dressed figure outside, and both Brenda and Mrs. Kall witness a horrifying apparition at the windows. Mrs. Kall claims to recognize the specter as the recently buried John Lorraine himself. Anne, unable to sleep, leaves her room to retrieve a book, hearing unexplained sounds in the house. The narrative establishes classic Gothic elements—isolated mansion, family secrets, meteorological pathetic fallacy, and the return of the dead.
