The main story follows Gordon Leigh, a charming London swindler who preys on wealthy women in the Soho district. He targets a well-dressed, veiled woman he encounters in a fog-shrouded pub, intending to rob her after intoxicating her. He lures her to his shabby residence at 13 Archers Lane. When he removes her veil to reveal her face, he experiences profound shock. The woman then fatally stabs him with a concealed blade. She murders his sister Kate as well before escaping down the stairs as neighbors are alerted by screams and blood discovered in the corridor. The story suggests the mysterious woman is the female incarnation of Jekyll's dark duality.
