Clark Carrados, "Miradas de Ultratumba" (Looks from Beyond the Grave) This Spanish-language terror serial, published by Editorial Bruguera in December 1979, opens with the mysterious death of Nephertys, an exotic dancer performing a sword dance at the Alhambra theatre. During her act before fifteen hundred spectators, she becomes rigid upon glimpsing a heavy-faced man in the front row, then deliberately drives a sword through her own chest in what appears to be ritual suicide. Detective Dag Bolton, present at the performance, notes her momentary loss of composure when she spots the stranger. Police chief Robertson dismisses murder theories given the public witnesses. Bolton begins vacation while Robertson discreetly investigates. Bolton encounters an African woman searching for Philip Lawlison, an eccentric Englishman who lived in Africa. The narrative then shifts to reveal the heavy man—Walter Empson—meeting with a mysterious figure called Jones, who possesses a black volcanic-stone statuette of a woman. Empson claims the statuette produced results regarding Nephertys, suggesting supernatural or hypnotic influence in her death. Jones refuses further commissions and demands the statuette's return.
