Catalog Note: "Granja de Malditos" by Ralph Barby
*Granja de Malditos* (*Damned Farm*), the featured serial in this terror collection installment, concerns Ronald and Margaret Evans, whose adult son Alex suffers severe drug addiction and withdrawal symptoms. Confined to his bed during crisis, Alex becomes violent and incoherent. When Margaret suggests a rehabilitation farm as preferable to psychiatric hospitalization, Ronald reluctantly agrees. He extracts a Bible oath from Alex promising attendance at such a facility in exchange for procuring drugs to ease withdrawal. Ronald then navigates a sordid urban underworld—visiting the Popcorn snack bar, negotiating with drug dealers, and encountering an unnervingly inhuman woman in a stairwell vestibule who supplies the contraband. The narrative combines domestic crisis with noir urban elements and subtle horror imagery, particularly the disturbing characterization of the female dealer and encounters with a supernatural-seeming black dog struck by Ronald's car earlier.
