The following morning, Leeds departs without understanding what he witnessed. Upon returning home, he learns from Dr. Fortescue that Wilma Faggin—a patient he had treated for anemia and whom Leeds encountered at Blakefield's house—has died of sudden heart failure. The narrative suggests sinister connections between Blakefield's mysterious activities and Wilma's fate, combining elements of psychological suspense with supernatural suggestion.
