Noche tenebrosa

A woman in period dress holds aloft a glowing lantern against shadowed architectural forms, her face turned upward in a gesture of defiance or summoning. Lou Carrigan's cover for this Spanish-language pulp employs the visual vocabulary of Gothic horror—dramatic chiaroscuro, supernatural light, historically costumed figures—that defined the genre across European and American adventure magazines. Published by Bruguera under their Terror imprint, the work reflects the continuation of pulp aesthetics into the 1980s, when woodcut-style painting remained the house style for mass-market genre fiction in Spain and Latin America.
