The Ceylon Blue Book
This annual directory and guide to Ceylon (modern-day Sri Lanka) represents the practical publishing that sustained the pulp magazine industry alongside fiction titles. The Ceylon Blue Book served colonial administrators, merchants, and planters with administrative rosters, commercial information, and local intelligence. Such reference volumes, printed on cheap wood pulp and distributed widely throughout the British Empire, formed the backbone of periodical publishing in the early twentieth century. While lacking the illustrated adventure covers of contemporary fiction magazines, these working documents shared the same production methods and distribution networks that made serialized stories and exotic reportage accessible to readers across the English-speaking world.
