"The Golden Idol of Mount Rosa" This adventure story is set in Bummer's Bend, a rough Arizona mining town during the gold rush. The narrative introduces multiple factions: the military fort under aged General Howard; prospectors; gamblers and ruffians; local Indians (Cheyenne, Sioux, Apache, Arapaho) under the feared Apache chief Hoko-me-go-to; and various strangers arriving by stage. A horse race for a thousand-dollar purse, featuring Miss Evelyn Howard's prized saddle-horse "Flying Star," draws crowds to the town. Key arrivals include Captain Mayburn (a buckskin-clad frontiersman) and his mixed party; a young woman dressed in male attire wearing revolvers; and an elegant young man on a spotted horse who introduces himself as "the Sport" or "Cinnamon Chip." Dandy Dell, the town's disreputable mayor and gambler, initially dismisses this newcomer as a "popinjay," but his half-breed associate Lynx warns that the stranger's horse is formidable. Tension emerges as Dell confronts the Sport at the Girard Hotel.
