THE GHOST OF GORGON'S GULCH
This issue features the opening chapters of "The Ghost of Gorgon's Gulch," a Western adventure serial. Judge Judson Elliott leads a group of colonists westward in prairie wagons to settle Cat City Basin in the mountains, having purchased land from a fraudulent agent. Upon arrival, the party discovers the promised village is merely a crude cabin casino operated by a man named Myers and a Chinese assistant. The colonists, including Elliott's daughter Ethel and her suitor Alf Montague, establish a tent camp. A horseman named Chris Carleton, lieutenant to the outlaw "Deadwood Dick," arrives with a warning: the colonists must vacate within ten hours or face violent retribution, as Deadwood Dick claims sovereignty over the basin. Judge Elliott refuses to abandon the land. Meanwhile, ten miles north at an isolated cabin, a woman named Edith greets a mysterious horseman—suggested to be connected to a criminal enterprise involving stolen money. The narrative combines frontier settlement conflicts with outlaw intrigue and hints at romantic complications.
