Deadwood Dick Library, Vol. 1, No. 5
· April 12, 1899

"Wild Ivan: The Boy Claude Duval," by Edward L. Wheeler, features a young mounted figure wielding a lance across desert terrain. The illustration captures the adventurous spirit of Deadwood Dick Library, a dime novel series that serialized frontier and outlaw narratives for mass audiences. Published by M.J. Ivers & Co. at five cents per issue, these wood-pulp magazines trafficked in action-adventure tales set in the American West and beyond. The dramatic cover imagery—dynamic composition, vivid hand-coloring, bold typography—established visual conventions that would directly influence comic book design: serialized storytelling, genre-specific iconography, and sensational imagery designed to arrest the eye at the newsstand.
