Catalog Note
*The Ghost of the Viennese Waltz* by Arnold Briggs (translated by Ginés Rodríguez) is a espionage-thriller set in occupied Austria during October 1944. The narrative follows three visitors—Colonel Werner Lukas, Captain Albert Kleiber (a U-boat commander), and Militza Rezke—journeying to Kronjus Castle, where political prisoner Rolf Lukas is detained. Rolf, Werner's younger brother and former hussar lieutenant, maintains sardonic humor despite imprisonment. The visitors propose an escape scheme involving hidden gold and Margaret Thompson, a hostage whose safety depends on Rolf's cooperation. The story explores themes of loyalty, betrayal, family conflict, and survival amid Nazi regime collapse, presenting a complex portrait of Austrian officers navigating competing allegiances during wartime.
