"The Seven Sirens" by Geo Dugan
This Spanish-language detective serial, translated by A. Martín from the 1953 English original, follows James Benton, a young accounting clerk in Arkansas City, whose budding romance with Manon Lesurc—a French dancer aboard the riverboat "Seven Sirens"—provokes family conflict. When Benton's uncle and employer Abraham Burns learns of the relationship, he confronts both Benton and his eccentric father Sidney (a former baritone and bohemian). Sidney, sympathetic but cautious, eventually forbids the romance. That evening, Sidney encounters Manon at the lake and warns her directly: Benton will not arrive for their scheduled meeting, and she should cease encouraging him. The narrative examines tensions between small-town propriety and youthful desire, with Sidney's measured intervention disrupting what might develop between the respectable young clerk and the transient performer.
